This approach is wonderful for an experimenter but may also have a steeper learning curve.

Hermes on the other hand is a single board transceiver which is designed to be easier to use, the only missing link was a 100W amplifier with a good housing to make it a plug and play SDR (well almost).

This PA and LPF is designed on a 160mm x 220mm 4 layer PCB which slides into the pictured extrusion, this can be manufactured in quantity and is MIL spec. I have used two RD100HHF1s in push pull for the finals driven by two RD15s.

<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-nKsCsEz9LBU/Tr6DVviGsfI/AAAAAAAAAC4/F4V9MFH3FNs/s1600/100W+TOP.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; i'm using the W5WC flavour of PowerSDR (TM) with the following settings:

Mode: CWU, Filter: 500Hz, Preamp: OFF, Random: ON, Dither: ON.

The receiver input is connected to a 50 ohm dummy load, there are a total of 6 spurs that I can see from 160M through 6M, noise levels are almost constant from 160M through 6M.

If you have an HPSDR Mercury, Flex (TM) or any other SDR you can compare this with your setup (uploading test figures to the blog would be much appreciated!), i'll run some extensive tests on the Rx and Tx over the next few days and document it for you.

regards,

Abhi

P.S. The spur at 50Mhz is the second harmonic of the 25Mhz PHY Clock.

UPDATE: I wanted to add that the noise floor is not calibrated, with a 50 ohm dummy load the calibrated noise floor would be lower.

<object style="height: 390px; (this code was written by Phil even before the PCB was ready).

The board is 8 layers and with 3 clocks at 1.5v PP, multiple frequencies being generated by the FPGA, high signal speeds on the PHY and the extremely sensitive Rx front end make the routing, placement and the ground plane system extremely critical.

Initial tests look very good; there are 6 spurs within the HAM bands from 160M through 6M, most will fall below the noise floor with the antenna connected. Noise floor is within 2dB across all bands and sensitivity measures at about -136dB on 20M with preamplifier ON.
Transmitter tests look promising too......all harmonics and spurious outputs are well below 45dB.

Have a look at the short youtube video below:

Hermes Video

More to follow :)
